LETHAL LEVELS OF radiation have been discovered in areas of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant almost five months after it was crippled by an earthquake and tsunami. It is feared that radiation levels could have been this high since the initial disaster on March 11, but have only just been discovered. This may be changing soon now that Super Typhoon Songda, which according to Weather Underground will form shortly as a Category 5 storm with 156+ mph winds, will take a northeasterly direction and 2 days later will pass right above Fukushima. Dit heeft de exploitant van de elektriciteitscentrale, Tepco, dinsdag bekendgemaakt. Ruim twee maanden na de verwoestende aardbeving en tsunami lekt nog steeds radioactiviteit uit de centrale. De technici nemen nu na nader onderzoek aan dat in de reactoren 2 en 3 de meeste brandstofstaven zijn gesmolten en op de bodem van het reactorvat zijn gevallen, net als in reactor 1. Onderzoekers hebben kleine hoeveelheden radioactieve stoffen aangetroffen in de moedermelk van vijf Japanse vrouwen. Dat meldde het Japanse persbureau Kyodo woensdag. It is unclear if it will have a circus coloration yet. From DJ: "Giant polyester covers will soon be placed around the damaged reactor buildings at Japan's Fukushima nuclear complex to help contain the release of radioactive substances into the atmosphere, the plant operator said Friday. This probably means that Japan looked long and hard at the concrete shell option and realized it was impossible, which is true. The problem is that by now the melted cores are not in the complex, but deep beneath it and the radioactivity is actively seeping directly into the soil. And since the polyester tent idea is doomed to failure, it is only a matter of time before the Simpsons dome is firmly in place over a ragion with a radius of about 20 kilometers. Impossible you say? NHK reports that "Tokyo Electric Power Company says the No.1 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is believed to be in a state of "meltdown". The utility company said on Thursday that most of the fuel rods are likely to have melted and fallen to the bottom of the reactor. Earlier in the day, it found that the coolant water in the reactor is at a level which would completely expose nuclear fuel rods if they were in their normal position." And from Reuters: "The finding makes it likely that at one point in the immediate wake of the disaster the 4-meter-high stack of uranium-rich rods at the core of the reactor had been entirely exposed to the air." Brilliant: and all the newly pumped water is about to seep either into the groundwater or the ocean.
