De Amerikaanse toezichthouder Commodity Futures Trading Commission onderzoekt informeel de manier waarop de goudprijs in Londen wordt samengesteld. De waakhond bekijkt nauwkeurig of de goudprijs wordt gemanipuleerd, zo vertellen bronnen aan The Wall Street Journal. In Londen bepaalt een handvol banken (Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Bank of Nova Scotia en Soci�t� G�n�rale) twee keer per dag de spotprijs voor een troy ounce (31,1 gram, red.) fysiek goud, geven de bronnen aan. De waakhond bekijkt meerdere zakeb, bijvoorbeeld of de goud- en de zilverprijs transparant genoeg worden samengesteld. In de zilvermarkt begon de CFTC al in 2008 onderzoek te doen, na verschillende klachten. De goudprijs heeft invloed op de prijzen van juwelen en aantal derivaten. Mijnbouwbedrijven, die ruwe materialen aan raffinaderijen verkopen, is de goudprijs ook belangrijk. Het vermeende onderzoek komt niet geheel toevallig op een moment dat er wenkbrauwfronzend naar verschillende benchmarks wordt gekeken. (bron: telegraaf.nl )

It�s astounding that the price of silver has fallen from $35 to $28 with the nature of the tight physical market. I think silver is in enormously short supply. The combination of the industrial and medical uses, in combination with silver�s monetary attributes, is going to lead to the demand overwhelming available mine supply. We also have the massive short positions in silver and there is very little inventory available. Reden daarvoor zijn banden met Mexicaanse drugskartels, waar een onderzoekscommissie van de Amerikaanse Senaat op is gestuit. Volgens het onderzoekscomit� heeft de Amerikaanse divisie van HSBC het witwassen van miljarden dollars aan Mexicaans drugsgeld mogelijk gemaakt gedurende een periode van zeven jaar. Dezelfde bank heeft volgens de Amerikaanse senaat ook het verbod op financi�le transacties met Iran geschonden. Daarnaast zou de bank financi�le diensten hebben verleend aan banken in Bangladesh en Saudi-Arabi�. Die banken worden ervan verdacht Al-Qaida en andere terroristische groepen te hebben gefinancierd. The head of the U.S. futures regulator has the support he needs to pass a long-awaited rule that would curb excessive speculation in commodity markets, a source with knowledge of the agency's rule-making told Reuters on Tuesday. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission announced on Tuesday that it would vote on October 18 on a rule limiting the number of contracts any one speculative trader could hold in commodity markets. Some CFTC commissioners also are skeptical that the limits would prevent a run-up in prices. The agency's economists have not been able to find a causal link between speculation and price volatility. One study concluded commodity index traders are not causing price volatility and may actually help reduce it. The Dodd-Frank legislation gave the CFTC the power to set position limits to curb excessive speculation in 28 commodities, including energy, metals and agricultural markets, "as appropriate." The law required the CFTC to have position limits in place by mid-January (bron: gata.org )

Recall that a week ago we reported a stunning drop in the large commercial net short positions (LCNS) in both gold and in silver futures. The �commercials� continued to reduce their net short positioning in this week�s report, a small 1,932-contract reduction in gold futures, but another relatively large reduction of 5,339 contracts in the LCNS for silver futures.
